For several years now, the Area Education Agencies (AEA) across the state of Iowa have provided "free" access to all schools in Iowa. These databases provide great resources for students and staff who need to access up to date, accurate information for research, technology tips, and reading connections.
To access this database you can go to http://www.iowaaeaonline.org
You will need to enter your school's username and password to continue.
You can get the username and password from your school's teacher-librarian/media specialist! :-)
The librarian at your school can help you with any questions you have regarding how to use the databases and they will be happy to help you and your students learn how to use these great resources.
Happy Researching!

eBooks
Our school district is starting to do more with eBooks and eReaders.
The debate is Kindle vs. Nook, but since our local public library only allows downloads of eBooks to the Nook for now, then it looks like for now we will purchase Nooks for our district. The push is for having them in the middle schools and high schools for now.
And of course there is also the new iPad to think about as well.
More to come in future posts!

Care of Books
One of the first lessons we try to teach students and staff is how to take care of library materials.
Here is a cute video that does just that!

Home to School: Accessing the Library Online
Our school district uses Follett "Destiny" OPAC (online public access catalog) to keep track of library materials.
Gone are the days of the "card catalog". We have had an online catalog for out school district library collections since 1997. Over that time we have gone to a "web-based" or "online" catalog to keep track of all the books and other materials for check out housed in the district school libraries.
Students and staff can use computers in the library, the classroom, or at home (any computer that has Internet access) to check if their school library has a certain book or item and if it is available for checkout.
Outside of the library you can access your school's online library catalog by doing the following:

- Click on this link (and then when it comes up save it in your favories if you'd like) http://destiny.siouxcityschools.org
- On the main page, click on the name of your school or your child's school
- Follett Destiny will open up to the search or "find" page
- Under "Find" type in the author, title, or subject [what the book is about], click on "go" or hit the "enter" key to finish your search.
- A list of items will come up, 10 at a time, to go forward click on "next" to go back in the list click on "previous"
- If an item is in, it will have a "green" spot at the top right saying "in"...if it is already checked out the spot will be "red" and it will say "out"
- Don't forget to write down the name of the book AND the call number (the book's address)--listed under the item [ex. F Bro or E Van or 641.5 Kat]--if you show this to the librarian or library assistant they can help you find where the book is when you come in the library.
Happy Searching and Remember...if you need help just ask in the library and the librarian or library assistant will be happy to help you find what you need!
Ramona Quimby is Back!
Ramona Quimby is Back! The new movie "Ramona and Beezus" based on the beloved Beverly Cleary "Ramona" series of books hits theaters July 23rd!
I love the tag line for this movie: "a little sister goes a long way"! [It's so true, believe me, I grew up with 5 sisters!]
The movie has a great cast:
Joey King=Ramona
Selena Gomez=Beezus
John Corbett=Mr. Quimby
Bridget Moynahan=Mrs. Quimby
Ginnifer Goodwin=Aunt Bea
Josh Duhamel=Uncle Hobart
Sandra Oh=Mrs. Meacham (Ramona's Teacher)
The movie is Rated "G", so it's fun for the whole family!
If you get a chance, try reading the book first. "Beezus and Ramona"
Beezus and Ramona was the first book Beverly Cleary wrote introducing the characters of the Quimby sisters. The first "official" book in the Ramona series is "Ramona the Pest" in which Ramona goes to school and starts kindergarten.
I suggest you read them all! Ramona is a great character-she was popular way before anyway had ever even heard of another pest of a kindergartner-Junie B. Jones!
Movies are just one way to bring books and technology together....just remember!...the book is always better than the movie! So, read the book, then go enjoy the movie with your friends and family!

Welcome to Book Bytes
Hello Everyone!
My name is Ms. Moser. I am a certified K-12 librarian (aka media specialist), currently working as a K-5 elementary teacher-librarian for a school district in the northwest part of Iowa. I have been a librarian for 13 years and in that time I have seen the use of the school libraries I serve (currently NINE of them) change rapidly over the last decade + from the quiet place you go to read and get away from it all to the buzzing hive of information users searching online via computers to access the information they need for that homework problem or report or just using the computer to figure out which books we might have in the library.
Times change, old books are updated with new books, technology is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our 21st century students and staff. But books and technology do not have to compete! They each have their own place in our lives and sometimes those places even overlap!
This blog will show you how that's done. Sometimes we will post about books, old and new, that might be fun reads or great for resources for learning. Sometimes we will post about new technologies (hardware, software, websites) that can be used in the classroom. Sometimes we will even post how books and technology combine to show off each other and create fun and exciting ways that students can use technology to learn more about books and reading!
Please come back often and check us out as there are always new books and new technologies to encourage a love of reading!
